HILLBILLY HOT ROLLS

  1. Activate the Yeast:
    • In a large mixing bowl, dissolve the sugar in the warm water.
    • Sprinkle the yeast over the water and let it sit for about 5 minutes until it becomes frothy.
  2. Prepare the Dough:
    • Add the melted butter, salt, and beaten egg to the yeast mixture. Stir to combine.
    • Gradually add the flour, one cup at a time, mixing well after each addition. Continue adding flour until the dough starts to pull away from the sides of the bowl and is no longer sticky.
  3. Knead the Dough:
    • Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface.
    • Knead for about 8-10 minutes, until the dough is smooth and elastic.
  4. First Rise:
    • Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, turning it once to grease the top.
    • Cover the bowl with a clean kitchen towel or plastic wrap and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 to 1 1/2 hours, or until doubled in size.
  5. Shape the Rolls:
    • Punch down the risen dough to release the air.
    • Divide the dough into 12-15 equal pieces and shape each piece into a ball.
    • Place the rolls on a greased or parchment-lined baking sheet, spacing them a bit apart.
  6. Second Rise:
    • Cover the rolls with a clean kitchen towel and let them rise again for about 30-45 minutes, or until puffy.
  7. Bake:
    • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
    • Bake the rolls for 15-20 minutes, or until golden brown on top.
    • Remove from the oven and brush the tops with melted butter while they are still hot.
  8. Serve:
    • Allow the rolls to cool slightly before serving.
    • Enjoy them warm, with butter, or as a side to your favorite meal.
