Homemade German Chocolate Cake

Directions:

1. Preheat the oven to 375°F. Grease two 8 or 9-inch round baking pans and line the bottoms with parchment paper.

2. In a large bowl, whisk together sugar, flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.

3. In another bowl, beat eggs, buttermilk, oil, and vanilla extract until well combined. Gradually add this mixture to the dry ingredients, stirring until smooth.

4. Stir in boiling water until the batter is thin. Pour the batter evenly into the prepared pans.

5. Bake for 25 – 35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Cool the cakes in the pans for 5 minutes, then transfer them to wire racks to cool completely.

6. For the German Chocolate Frosting, in a medium saucepan, combine brown sugar, granulated sugar, butter, egg yolks, and evaporated milk. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until the mixture thickens. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla extract, chopped pecans, and shredded coconut. Let it cool completely before using.

7. For the Chocolate Buttercream Frosting, melt butter in a saucepan, then stir in cocoa powder. Alternately add powdered sugar and evaporated milk, beating until smooth and spreadable. Add vanilla extract and mix well.

8. Once the cakes are completely cooled, spread the German Chocolate Frosting over one layer, then place the other layer on top. Frost the top and sides of the cake with the Chocolate Buttercream Frosting.

9. Serve and enjoy your delicious Homemade German Chocolate Cake!
